Inevitably when we have guests over for dinner, I like to experiment and try fun new recipes. Occasionally, the dishes do not turn out as well as planned and I have to make my apologies, but this time, it was delicious! We had a lot of fresh strawberries on hand, so when planning the menu for our dear friends A & K, I immediately thought to make an angel food cake. I never had before so it was a challenge I was thrilled to accept! Honestly, I just searched the internet for a recipe, and when I found this by Alton Brown (who is one of our favorite chefs- his creations are almost always right on the money), I knew I had a winner!
I frequently add my own spin onto a recipe, but this is a delicate cake so I carefully followed the instructions as written. Because of this, I will share the pictures of how certain parts should look, but will leave the steps and details to Alton!

Do not skip the spinning and sifting steps which are key for making a light, fluffy cake (that's my grandma's old sifter...so old school and still works so well)!
Don't get discouraged! The hand mixer may take a bit longer than you wish, but hang in there until you have soft peaks like these!
When it comes time to dust the surface with the flour mixture, do so gradually and lightly fold into the whipped ingredients; another important step for keeping the cake airy.
Once the oven time is finished, you will have a beautiful browned cake bottom, which when sliced, looks like this...
Delectable! And silly me, I was so excited to eat this, I forgot to take a picture of it topped with sliced strawberries and homemade whipped cream (it is SO much more flavorful than store-bought, don't you agree?)
Our guests were delighted and my sweet-toothed judge gave this a 5- said it was better than any other angel food cake he has eaten!
Angelically yours (well, the cake anyway),
